To clean the parts you can use Simple Green or Oxy Clean. The extra flat tip screwdriver is available in the event that the 3 thumbscrews are too tight on the Abu faceplate, but most importantly, for the pawl cover.
I use a variety of lubricants but the Abu Garcia brand products work well because they do their job well and can be found at most stores.įrom my screwdriver kit, I only use the 1.4mm flat tip and the #1 Phillips screwdrivers. You can use any reel lube and oil that you prefer. Southwestern Parts and Service is also a great resource for schematics and parts. If you’re not sure what you’re looking for or need a reel schematic most of the Abu Garcia Schematics are available online through Abu Garcia. If you find parts need to be replaced during the cleaning process you can find parts readily available on eBay or even through your local bait and tackle shop. Here’s what you’ll need to get started cleaning your fishing reels.
#GARCIA AMBASSADEUR 5000 HOW TO#
Here’s how to clean and lubricate an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur fishing reel.īig thanks to Steven Gonzales for the assistance with this post! Tools and Supplies Needed Some of the parts may have slight variations but the overall process will be the same. These basic steps for cleaning and lubricating a fishing reel will work for all baitcast fishing reels. As always, one may find some easier methods, but here’s my method. Here’s a guide to cleaning your fishing reels. If you like to tinker, taking apart an Abu reel is relatively easy, if you keep some key points in mind. If you don’t have the time or the desire to take your catfish reels apart, your local reel repair shop will clean reels for around 20–30 bucks each. Keeping your fishing reels clean and well lubricated assures optimum performance.
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur fishing reels can cast a mile, as well as haul in monster catfish and they’ll stand up to decades of use and abuse and keep on performing. Hence it should lessen the chance of the spool rotating faster than the line pulling off of it, but also at the middle of the cast the lure should be pulling less on the spool because it should be rotating under it's own mass.Abu Garcia Ambassadeur bait cast fishing reels are loved by catfish anglers all across the United States and are hands down the most popular fishing reels for catfish. 10# braid is the size of 4# but as far as weight what's the difference?) Because if the braid is heavier the increased rotational mass would mean the spool would take more energy to speed up the spool, but once it was rotating it would rotate longer. Braid is lighter than it's comparable weight line, but is it lighter than it's comparable size line? (i.e. I'm not sure I'm explaining this well, but here's my theory. The one with the most weight would probably help reduce backlash, and may cast further, as long as the line was light. I don't know if anyone has done this yet or not, but when you spool your reel with mono, mono/braid, or just braid what is the weight difference? Because I'm wondering about the rotational mass of the spool at that point.
My primary target is Gar, so I need to be able to cast a bit, yet hold up to the fight of a big fish. My draw to braid is the high tensile strength to line size ratio. I would like this reel to be as usable as possible in a multitasking type of way though I appreciate it has it's ideal use simply due to the nature of it's design, I can accept that I just don't know what that ideal is.Ĭlick to expand.1. I think that I am explaining myself but I will be happy to answer questions if I am leaving out some detail that is critical. I am not asking so much about brands (though I am very open to opinions on that as well) but more so just the general type of line that will give me the best performance out of this type of a reel. I would really appreciate some input on what kind of line will work well on this reel.ġ.Does it perform better with mono versus braid versus ?Ģ.Is it better to use a heavier line and if so how heavy as a baseline? So I have totally stripped all of the line off of the reel and am going to completely re-spool it. The line buried in on itself, didn't feel like it flowed off the reel, and really just wasn't enjoyable to use. I did this on my other reel as well which is a Diawa Exceler and it was golden however the Abu was just frustrating. This past weekend I went down to fish on the Altamaha and on a friends advice I stripped it down about halfway and then topped off the spool with braid specifically 30lb Suffix brand. I have had like 15lb mono on it for quite awhile but felt like the line was 'lumpy' on the spool.
Backstory: I have a slightly older (I think it's like a 1970's model) reel that I like a lot but I have a question about spooling it up.
